D&D Character Sheets - Simple, Digital, Free

ttrpg

Lots of digital D&D character sheet apps offer a ton of features but get so expensive. This is my attempt at merging the best of the pencil and paper approach (free, no automations that break when you get into homebrew)... with the advantages of being digital (easy search, spell sorting, adjustable sizing for lots of text, and not losing your papers!).

What Does My D&D Character Sheets (DDCS) App Do?

While there's no perfect solution out there that works for everyone, I think this table below helps make it clear how my D&D Character Sheets compares to other options.

Comparison Table of DDCS and Other Options

Feature / Benefit DnDBeyond, Roll20, etc Pencil & Paper Fillable PDF Spreadsheet DDCS
Totally free
Familiar / official layout
Comes with pre-populated content
Supports homebrew & custom content ⚠️
Math done for you / one-click updates / auto-calculations ⚠️ ⚠️
Easy spell list management
Works the same on any computer/OS ⚠️ ⚠️
No/minimal risk of losing / damaging your sheet
Flexible text formatting & layout ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️

The main thing you'll quickly notice is that, unlike most other apps out there, I have intentionally not included autocalculations (like one-click Long Rests) or prepopulated SRD content.

The main reason for this is I want to keep this as flexible (and barrier-free) as possible for homebrew, and not get close to any legal / licensed content messes.

This is meant a highly flexible BYO-content digital character sheet that sticks fairly closely to the general layout we're familiar with from the official downloadable ones (5E and 5.5E). A way to make unlimited player characters and use all the home-brew you want—for free! 🙂

If you have any feedback or suggestions, while I will stick with the end user experience I'm personally aiming for and can't guarantee timeframes, I welcome your thoughts! You can email me (Sarah) at hello@questadon.com.

Features Currently Available

  • Free to use, no subscription required
  • Familiar layout based on the official D&D character sheet (5E and 5.5E compatible)
  • Organized storage so you never lose a sheet
  • Unlimited characters (add, duplicate, delete as you like)
  • Supports any 5E or 5.5E compatible content — homebrew, house rules, non-standard builds
  • Resizable & rich text formatting for bigger text blocks
  • A sortable and expandable table for spells
  • Pop-out spell detail cards that can be resized, moved around, and formatted
  • Fully searchable interface (use Command + F and find that buried feat)
  • Light and dark mode
  • Consistent display across operating systems (currently only desktop supported, but I'm working on that)
  • No app install needed
  • Export to PDF (basic—retains formatting but uses quite a few pages)

Features I Hope to Implement

  • Tablet and mobile compatibility
  • Content imports (you're responsible to own it)
  • Minimal formulas (i.e. When you change your Ability Score, automatically adjusting your modifier)
  • Better options for class-specific content (i.e. Druid Wild Shapes)
  • A way to visually differentiate one character sheet from another (i.e. probably colour scheme; probably not handling image uploads)

Features DDCS Won't Be Offering

  • Automated math (to keep total homebrew/content flexibility, almost no fields are locked into a specific function, so you update it manually, like you would with pencil and paper)
  • Pre-populated content (you are responsible to source and add content you own/have permission to use)
  • Fancy animations (I want to keep this app light and quick)
  • Other TTRPG systems or versions (this is just for D&D 5.5E and 5E)

Full Disclosure: this isn't free for ME. But I found a way to do it affordably and support it at a scale that a good amount of people can use it, because while I built this for my own preferences, it always feels better to share things!

So you using this and enjoying it is part of the point of me making this. 🙂 I love hearing from people who are happy to have found DDCS. (You can email me (Sarah) at hello@questadon.com)

That said, I'm just one person, and this is a little side project (among many). Kindness is appreciated.

Granted, if the userbase were to grow beyond what I can support at this tier, I'd need to get creative to figure out how to handle that. I only say that as an "anything can happen" scenario. I always want to keep this affordable and accessible, and stick with the originally stated goals here.
